SAFETY
04
When it comes to good housekeeping,
you can never have ‘too much of a good
thing’. Our Central Wanchai ByPass-
Central Interchange (CWBCI) project
in Hong Kong has demonstrated its
leadership in this respect, bringing home a
prestigious Good Housekeeping Award in
last four years.
This year’s ‘Good Housekeeping Forum
and Award Presentation 2015’ was held at
the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition
Centre on 4 February, where our project
team outperformed 225 entries and 64
organisations to scoop a Silver award,
building the track record of 2 Silvers and
a Gold.
The Good Housekeeping campaign
aims to reduce workplace accidents and
enhance productivity by encouraging
practitioners to implement good
housekeeping as part of their daily routine.
To earn this title, our CWB-CI team
incorporated the ‘5S’ (organisation,
neatness, cleanliness, standardisation
and discipline) system into their safety
management system and safety culture
by implementing a series of ‘hard’ and
‘soft’ controls to improve the working
environment and workers’ safe behaviour.
‘Hard’ control – rolling
out safety measures
systematically
Strategic planning is the first step to
success. At the planning stage of various
construction activities, the team made
hard safety controls a priority.
This entailed demarcation of vehicular
access and pedestrian walkways; proper
stacking of materials and equipment; and
segregating the operational zone of heavy
plant from other areas.
The team developed a series of
safety standards to support this and
implemented the ‘Take 5’ Process &
‘Simply Safe’ to foster a strong safety
culture and to support systematic
and efficient implementation of safety
measures.
‘Soft’ control – all-round
participation of all staff
In the area of soft control, the active
support and participation of our staff is
considered crucial. We have successfully
organised Leadership Training and
Advanced Safety Induction Training for
supervisory staff and frontline workers,
respectively. The aim is to reinforce
people’s understanding of the concept
and benefits of safe working behaviors.
To maintain safety leadership our staff
undergoes continuous safety trainings.
With continual implementation of the
above measures, we have seen a
significant improvement in the level of
commitment by our staff and workers to
ensuring good housekeeping becomes
standard practice.
Moreover, our project’s senior
management team has also taken the lead
in working with all staff and subcontractors
to conduct a weekly tidiness activity. We
are committed to leading by example
and are delighted to see continuous
improvement on our site.
Contributing to the
industry
Our unremitting commitment to safety not
only benefits the team but also contributes
to the industry as a whole. By participating
in the Good Housekeeping campaign, we
are able to share good practice with our
counterparts and facilitate discussion on
workplace safety. Ultimately, this uplifts the
safety performance standard across the
entire the industry.
Good housekeeping and safety measures
do not end with the campaign. As the
CWBCI project enters its final phase,
we remain committed to maintaining
our performance through to project
completion. Good job team – and keep up
the great work!
